Bendigo Lawn 75-7-7 df South Bendigo 64-5-5
The match of the year thus far lived up to all expectations as Bendigo Lawn
overcame top side South Bendigo 7 sets to 5.
Both teams were at full strength, with South playing both Aiden Fitzgerald and
Corbin Fleming for the first time this season. Whilst Lawn fielded a very strong
womens line up with Tamara Wright joining Mandy Connors.
Lawn started the better of the two teams, taking all three opening doubles sets.
A real bonus for lawn was brothers Curt and Ward Garwood’s surprise victory over
Fleming and Fitzgerald 8-4.
South however, as expected rallied at the singles, with Corbin Fleming and Aiden
Fitzgerald defeating Curt and Ward Garwood respectively. Both matches were of
particularly high standard, with Fleming irresistible in an 8-2 demolition of
the leagues no 1 ranked player. The match was highlighted by Flemings dominant
serve and scintillating passing shots.
In the women, Ashlea Baker proved that her victory over Connors-Butson in round
one was no fluke again taking her highly fancied opponent 8-5. Tamara Wright
squared the ledger in the girls for lawn with a strong victory over Maxine
Everitt.
Lawns men of Tiger Nihill and Stephan Butson were too strong for Grant Leader
and Jono Guy at 3 and 4, and put their team two sets up at the mixed.
South again rallied late in the day, with Fleming/Leader proving too strong for
Ward Garwood and Nihill and Fitzgerald and Baker overcoming Curt Gawood and
Connors Butson in a close tiebreaker.
Stefan Butson and Tamara Wright put the result beyond doubt for the Lawn with a
final match 8-3 victory. Overall a superb team performance.
Castlemaine 56-4-4 lt Spring Gully Mozzies 83-8-8
Spring Gully Mozzies made it two in a row when they accounted for Castlemaine in
their round 6 clash.
The Maine started strongly with opening doubles win to Matt Hartland and Shane
Burke. Mozzies hit back through women Jess Hartland and Bronwyn Osborne and 3 &
4 men Steve Rogers and Bryce Basillie.
Hartland and Burke moved the maine back ahead with solid singles victories,
however, that’s where things dried up.
The Mozzies dominated the rest of the singles with Jess Hartland and Osborne
backing up the doubles with singles victories, and Basillie and Rogers too
strong for their maine opponents Dean Harris and Rob Jefferies.
Shane Burke proved that he was his teams best player, combining with Harris to
take the last mens doubles, but it was too little to late. The mozzies took both
mixed sets and with that 10 valuable points.
Better players included Jess Hartland, Osborne and new recruit Bryce Basillie.
Strath Park 65-4-4 lt Strath Park Storm 80-8-8
Strath Park Storm did there chances of a top 2 finish no harm with a solid team
performance defeating club mates Strath Park 8 sets to 4.
With the Storm resting supervet Terry Smith, Andrew Lethlean was recalled to
fill the void. He combined with Michael Smyth in the opening mens doubles,
however, where outgunned by a younger Strath combination of Jack and Alistair
Baker.
With Tova Smith also out for the Storm, the Strath combination of Eliza Long and
Heather Robbins would have expected an opening victory, however, where out
pointed by Michelle Rodwell and Narelle Smyth.
The singles was one sided with the Storm taking all but the no 1 ladies, where
Eliza Long proved far too good for Narelle Smyth.
Strath Park rallied late in the day, taking the both the mixed, but the damage
was done. Best players for the winners included Michelle Rodwell, James McArther
and Danny Watson.
