Premier League
Players were greeted with adverse conditions when they arrived at the Nolan St
Complex for Round 7 of the BTA Sports Power Saturday pennant. Due to the
atrocious conditions premier league was moved from the lawn to the Complex, in
order for matches to get underway.
Bendigo Lawn 34-3-3 lead Strath Park Storm 26-2-2
Bendigo Lawn and Strath Park Storm were locked in a tense battle with Lawn
leading 3 sets to 2 when the rain came. Again it was the Garwood brothers, Curt
and Ward, who lead the lawn early. The two have become quite the force and
remain unbeaten together after 7 matches. Their consistent ground strokes and
solid vollies saw them prevail against the experienced Terry Smith and Michael
Smyth.
Lyn Wingrave was given a last minute call up, to partner Mandy Connors-Butson
against the Storms Tova Smith and Michelle Rodwell. The Storm girls were in fine
form, disposing of their lawn opponents 8 games to 6. That was to be then only
completed match in the womens section, with both singles in progress when play
was abandoned.
Stephan Butson again performed superbly in winning the two matches he was
involved in. Teaming up with Nick Bath to win a doubles match against Storms
Matt Conroy and Danny Watson. Butson then ended Watson’s unbeaten singles run
with an 8-0 hiding.
Strath Park 26-2-2 trailed Castlemaine 29-3-3
Strath Park and Castlemaine were also locked at 2 sets to 3 respectively before
being cut short. Strath started the stronger of the two teams, capturing the
opening womens doubles through Heather Robbins and Paige Ipsem and the 2nd mens
doubles were Rueben Ellis and Terry Baker overcame Pat McMillan and Rob
Jefferies.
Matt Hartland and Dean Harris got the Maine off and running against Jack Baker
and Jarrod Epps, with an 8-4 victory. With Castlemaine other two wins coming in
singles, where Pat McMillian and Alyssa Cole were both two strong for their
Strath opponents.
South Bendigo 52-5-5 lead Spring Gully Mozzies 43-4-4
South Bendigo and the Mozzies had gotten through 9 of the 12 sets before the
rain. The battle was tight with South leading 5 sets to 4.
Jamie Browns and Travis Toners tough season continued, when they were outclassed
by Aiden Fitzgerald and Frank Ryan. Fitzgerald then put the sword to Brown with
a strong 8-2 singles defeat. Toner hit back though to defeat Ryan 8-4.
At the 3 and 4 position, the South pair of Grant Leader and Simon Kelly were in
fine form in winning both the doubles and singles matches against Steven Rogers
and Stuart McGibbon.
In the womens the Mozzies were as expected taking all before them. Jess Hartland
and Bronwyn Osborne continued their unbeaten run in doubles, before both notched
up solid singles wins over Maxine Everitt and Narelle Smyth.
The match was evenly poised and could have gone either way at the mixed.
